Course content

This module considers supervision within an ethical and legal framework.

You will gain an introduction to supervision and explore the context of the difference between supervising online and in a face-to-face setting.

You will explore your own competencies and consider the ethical and legalities that underpin clinical supervision practice.

Module 2 will guide you in developing your approach to the supervisory relationship.

You will look at boundaries, create a supervision contract, learn to use challenges in a supportive manner, and explore how theory and skills enhance the supervision relationship.

You will also learn about supervision in the digital environment

In Module 3 you will focus on working with diversity in your counsellor supervisory relationships. You will look at legislation and ethical considerations in relation to barriers that may arise when supervising counsellors in your practice.

Module 4 is all about how you will support your supervisees who work online and how you can manage your own online supervision practice. You will be guiding your supervisees to adapt to an online environment, you will be developing a User-Centred approach to counselling supervision and exploring best practices during the different stages of supervision.

Module 5 focuses on you as the supervisor and how you will manage your own self-care and support. Being a reflective and reflexive practitioner will keep you psychologically safe and help you manage your work life balance in a way that is both professional and respectful to yourself.

Module 6 teaches the Shohet and Hawkins Seven Eyed Model of Supervision. This theory will provide you with a framework for developing your supervision practice. The Seven Eyed Model of supervision gives you a blueprint that helps you focus on different areas of your supervisee interaction. You will take part in experiential sessions and receive feedback from your tutor as you develop your theory, skills, and competence to work safely and ethically with those you supervise.

By Module 7 you will now be in supervision placement. This module will help you map the  ongoing support you will need to refine and develop your professional practice

Module 8 takes the learning and experience you have acquired during this course and teaches you how to apply this in a group setting. You will explore the differences of working with groups, how to identify and manage group processes and you will look at an example agenda for a particular group session

FAQs

The Advanced Certificate in Clinical Supervision course is taught, observed and assessed at the equivalent of level 6 and is designed to meet the Level 6 criteria, as outlined by
  • The Framework for Higher Education Qualifications of UK Degree-Awarding Bodies in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland (FHEQ)
  • The Framework for Qualifications of Higher Education Institutions in Scotland (FQHEIS).
This course’s credibility is further strengthened by its learning outcomes and assessments being aligned with the supervision training curriculum of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). This ensures that the course provides a comprehensive and advanced understanding of clinical supervision in theory and practice at a level equivalent to Level 6 (or Level 7 in Scotland). The curriculum and assessment require students to understand and apply sophisticated supervision theories, such as the Integrated Development Model and Shohet and Hawkins’ Seven-Eyed Model, both theoretically and in practice. This approach aligns with the expectations for advanced knowledge and the ability to critically evaluate information at this level. Institutions, including ours, may refer to their courses as having ‘Level 6 equivalence’ to indicate a standard of quality and depth. This practice is akin to that of other awarding bodies (such as Centra and CPCAB), who develop tailor-made qualifications for training providers that meet specific professional standards, even if they remain unregulated by Ofqual. Our commitment is to provide training that aligns with these rigorous standards, offering you a comprehensive and robust learning experience; this training has been designed to match the Level 6 descriptors set by the FHEQ/FQHEIS.
