Most of the course is self-directed learning via online lectures and resources; this means that you can work at your own pace, and complete the course without any external time pressure.
We offer live online events that are held every Wednesday and are open to all course members. At the live events, you can ask questions and clarify your learning. Kenneth Kelly
Kenneth – or Ken – Kelly is a practising counsellor and a clinical supervisor.
Ken completed a post-graduation certificate in online and telephone counselling in 2012.
He also holds a teaching qualification and authored the textbook Basic Counselling Skills: A Student Guide.
In his position as Co-Director at Counselling Tutor, Ken focuses on online training provision and specialises in outcome-based online learning.
Rory Lees-Oakes
Rory Lees-Oakes is Co-Director at Counselling Tutor and author of Counselling Theory in Practice: A Student Guide.
He spent over a decade lecturing in counselling. Rory is a qualified counsellor, clinical supervisor and lecturer.
In 2015, he was awarded the prestigious Silver Plato award for outstanding use of technology in education. He is also a Fellow of the Pearson Teaching Awards.

ACTO Level 2 membership is only open to qualified therapists.
Students still undertaking a formal training course cannot take this Advanced Certificate.
This is because ACTO Level 2 Professional membership requires that therapists hold a formal counselling or psychotherapy qualification.
The Process
This assessment is a pass/referred process.
The Details
Each candidate will be supported in submitting a final portfolio of maximum of 3,000 words to evidence their learning.
Part 01: Assignment
The assignment is made up of eight sections that cover the theory and ethics of working online. Questions have word counts ranging from 50 words to 250 words, and the total assignment is 1,350 words.
Part 02: Skills Evaluation
Each candidate will work with a peer and hold three skills sessions that will be recorded and peer-evaluated. The areas being evaluated are briefed in the assignment but include contracting, using skills, building rapport, and working with online endings.
Part 03: Case Study
Each candidate will complete a 900-word case study mapped to criteria taken from the recorded skills sessions.
Part 04: Reflections
Each candidate will submit a 300-word reflective statement of the learning journey.

Question – When are the tutor-led sessions held?
Answer – Every Wednesday from 20h00 to 20h30, a tutor will be available online.
Question – How often does the Advanced Certificate run?
Answer – The Advanced Certificate runs at the beginning of every month.
Question – I did a different course; can I do this assessment?
Answer – No, the assessment is open only to those who take the Counselling Tutor course. The reason for this is as follows.
Question – How long will this training and assessment take/how long do I need to set aside?
Answer – This depends on the individual student, however, the time estimated is 100 hours for both the training and preparation of the final portfolio.
You can take as long as you like to do the training and assessment.
